We are pleased to announce another major investment in the expansion of our European network infrastructure.
Following the recent expansion of our London network into the Telehouse campus, we will now be carrying out a significant upgrade to our Amsterdam presence by deploying our own network infrastructure at Nikhef, Amsterdam Science Park.
Nikhef is one of Europe's major internet connectivity hubs and provides access to an extensive ecosystem of internet exchanges, carriers, network operators and service providers. Establishing our own network presence at Nikhef will give us significantly greater control over our Amsterdam connectivity and provide a much stronger foundation for future capacity, peering and network expansion.
Unlike our recent London maintenance, where much of our own network infrastructure was already in place and the work primarily involved migrating routing between locations, this maintenance involves building our Amsterdam network essentially from the ground up.
During the maintenance window, our engineers will be deploying, configuring and validating the new network infrastructure at Nikhef before migrating production traffic onto it. This will include bringing our routing infrastructure online, establishing and validating upstream connectivity, configuring BGP sessions, announcing our IP address space from the new network, and performing extensive routing and connectivity testing before services are considered fully operational.
Expected Impact
This maintenance window will be considerably longer than our recent London migration.
Because we are deploying a new network rather than simply migrating between existing Tempest network locations, there are significantly more stages that must be completed and validated during the maintenance.
Customers using our Amsterdam infrastructure should therefore expect periods of network unavailability during the maintenance window.
We do not necessarily expect services to remain unavailable for the entire duration of the window. However, connectivity may be intermittent while individual parts of the new network are brought online, routing changes propagate, BGP sessions are established, and our engineers test traffic across the new infrastructure.
There may be periods where connectivity is restored and subsequently interrupted again while further configuration or testing is completed. Customers should therefore consider Amsterdam network connectivity potentially unstable until we have confirmed that the maintenance has been completed.
Our engineers will work to keep disruption as short as reasonably possible, but our priority will be ensuring that the new network is fully tested and operating correctly before the migration is declared complete.
Work Being Carried Out
During the maintenance window, we will:
- Deploy and bring our new Amsterdam network infrastructure at Nikhef into production.
- Configure our core routing and switching infrastructure.
- Establish and validate connectivity with our upstream network providers.
- Bring BGP sessions online and begin announcing our IP address space from Nikhef.
- Validate inbound and outbound routing across the new network.
- Perform connectivity, redundancy and failover testing.
- Migrate production traffic onto the new infrastructure.
- Monitor the network for stability before declaring the maintenance complete.

Moving into Nikhef represents an important step in the continued development of the Tempest network. Rather than relying on the limitations of our previous Amsterdam deployment, we are investing in infrastructure that gives us direct control over how the location is connected, routed and expanded in the future.
