Over the past few months, we have seen significant growth across our London network, both in customer traffic and the amount of infrastructure we operate.
As part of our ongoing capacity planning, we have been progressively upgrading different parts of the network to ensure capacity stays comfortably ahead of demand. The next stage of this work is an upgrade to one of our London spine switches, alongside an increase in backbone capacity between our London data centre locations.
The new spine will provide additional switching capacity and, more importantly, give us the port capacity and flexibility required for several further network upgrades we have planned.
At the same time, we will be upgrading the links between our London locations. This will provide substantially more inter-site capacity and headroom as traffic continues to grow, while preparing the backbone for additional connectivity and capacity planned over the coming months.
Rather than waiting for existing links or hardware to become a bottleneck, we are carrying out this work as part of our proactive capacity planning based on both current utilisation and expected growth.
Expected Impact:
This maintenance will involve an outage.
Several of the backbone links involved need to be physically moved onto the new infrastructure. This requires optics to be replaced at both ends of the links and fibre to be repatched.
As a result, connectivity will be lost while the physical work is carried out. Services will begin returning as links are brought back online, with our network team validating each path as the migration progresses.
We have deliberately scheduled this maintenance overnight and during the middle of the working week, when network utilisation is typically lower, to minimise the number of customers affected and reduce the overall impact of the required outage.
There may also be shorter periods of disruption as routing reconverges and we validate the new topology.
What We're Upgrading:
* Replacement and upgrade of a London spine switch
* Increased backbone capacity between our London data centre locations
* Replacement of optics on both ends of affected links
* Repatching of backbone and inter-site connectivity
* Additional switching and port capacity for upcoming network expansion
* Additional capacity headroom based on recent traffic growth and future forecasts
The amount of traffic carried by our network has continued to increase over the past few months, and this has already resulted in a number of capacity upgrades across our infrastructure.
We expect that trend to continue.
This maintenance is therefore not an isolated upgrade, but part of a wider programme of improvements to ensure the network can continue growing without existing infrastructure becoming a limiting factor.
Once all links have been migrated, we will validate routing, inter-site capacity and redundancy before declaring the maintenance complete.
Thank you for your patience while we continue expanding our London network.
